Description
M1 trains form the core fleet of Prague metro line C. They were developed around 2000 by ČKD Dopravní systémy and Siemens Kolejová vozidla and fully replaced the older Soviet sets. An aluminium body and asynchronous drives still make the M1 the most modern trains in regular Prague metro service.

Developing the M1
Work on the M1 began in the 1990s to replace ageing Soviet Ečs and 81-71 trains. The first passenger service ran on 27 January 2000. ČKD, Siemens and other European firms designed a fully walk-through train with a modern look and higher safety.
Five-car unit
The five-car unit has differently equipped cars and cannot be split. It offers upholstered seats, space for prams and wheelchairs, information displays and strong ventilation. The aluminium body cuts weight and energy use. Compared with earlier trains the M1 is quieter, more powerful and more accessible.
M1-MARA export
An export version, M1-MARA, was built for Maracaibo in Venezuela. Three-car units with pantograph current collection and air-conditioning were delivered in 2006–2007 and serve the city’s only metro line. It is a rare example of modern Czech rail technology exported outside Europe.
